Cape Fear Museum of History and Science collects, preserves, and interprets objects relating to the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear, and makes those objects and their interpretation available to the public through educational exhibits and programs.
Founded in 1898, it is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. The Museum presents a detailed chronology of the history of our region, the 20-foot-tall skeleton of Wilmington’s Giant Ground Sloth, the hands-on Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery, and several changing exhibit galleries. Cape Fear Museum presents a host of history and science programming for children, families, adults, and school groups throughout the year.
The Museum is a New Hanover County department and receives funding through the North Carolina Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative. It is the only museum in southeastern North Carolina accredited by the American Association of Museums and is also a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers.
Admission is always free for Cape Fear Museum members.
The first Sunday of every month is free for New Hanover County residents.
